The Birthday
My favourite aunt was approaching her 100th birthday and one month before the big day I started looking for a special gift; something personal and befitting of such a momentous occasion.
My search for something appropriate opened my eyes to just how difficult it was to mark those significant milestones and events in life.
I felt that this birthday, along with key events in my aunt’s life were newsworthy and worth capturing. So I was determined not to let it pass without a memorable record and something which would make my aunt feel as special as she was.
On my search it seemed as if there was a flood of “the same stuff”, of generic gifts even though recent customer trends had created a keen desire for personalised gifts. This was particularly visible with the success of personalised card websites.
And whilst reflecting on the success of personalised cards, it crossed my mind that for milestone occasions, it would be great to capture some of the interesting facts and stories behind the occasion or about the person.
And that prompted the idea for a high-quality personalised gift newspaper.
Writing about what’s happening in your sister’s life when she turns 40, or telling some of those funny stories that you’ve not had a chance to tell over the last few years, would be a great way to mark the occasion and engage family and friends.
These thoughts are what inspired me to create bethefrontpage – a high quality personalised gift newspaper.
The first copies of bethefrontpage gift newspaper were hand produced for friends and family who celebrated milestone birthdays, awards, anniversaries, weddings and births (and even one to commemorate the life of a relative). There is One Thing Our Newspaper Can’t Top
In the end I couldn’t find anything especially appropriate and I was forced to buy something less memorable than I wanted, in fact I can’t remember what it was.
However, in the end I didn’t need to worry because my aunt was so pleased by the arrival of the personally signed card from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II that the somewhat ordinary nature of my gift was overlooked.
I am also very pleased to report that she saw another 8 birthdays!!
She remained in relatively good health before quietly slipping away in her sleep two months short of her 109th birthday.
Looking back, I am grateful that my aunt’s 100th sent me searching. It led me to the gift I would have loved to give her on that day.
Since then, we have watched friends, families and colleagues open their own front pages, and the reaction is always the same. There is a pause, a smile, and then they read every word.
Every family has milestones worth marking well, whether it is a 1st birthday or a 50th. When theirs comes around, I would be delighted to help you put them on the front page.
